- Title:
- Sermons, Essays, and Torah Thoughts, mid 5685 Anno Mundi
- Scope & Content:
-
One of Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor's (HED’s) notebooks, containing [1] Sermons for various occasions, essays on Jewish themes and biblical and Rabbinic passages, Hebrew word studies, poems, remedies and protections, laws and customs, and Jewish data; [2] Financial records; and [3] Table of Contents for category [1].
The first item is dated to mid 5685 Anno Mundi (= 1925). A financial item on folio 131r seems to be dated to 20 Elul ‘63. Depending on which era is being used, this would be 1903, or approximately 1923, plus or minus.
Personal details: [A] A sermon that HED delivered on the dedication of his home, on 5651 Anno Mundi, week of Torah portion Ṿa-Yigash / ויגש and Hanukkah [= December 1890], is transcribed beginning on folio 111v (= HED p. 222). Here, as in his writing in MS Or 17051 (4), he follows the view that the blessing Sheheḥiyanu / שהחיינו is to be recited on this occasion – this was a matter of controversy; and here as there he gives the text of a kabbalistic ‘unification’ and thanksgiving formula to be recited prior to the blessing. [B] A number of works extracted here were obtained from Hakham Ḥayim.
[1] Folios 1 - top 131r: sermons, essays, etc., in Hebrew.
Most of the sermons, etc., are taken from the works of others, with glosses by HED, indicated by (ע”ד). Some items are HED’s original work.
Sermon occasions and essay topics include: Shabbat ha-gadol, the ‘Great Sabbath’, viz. the Sabbath before Passover; Purim; Passover; Shabbat Shuva; the Torah; the dedication of a Torah scroll in someone’s memory; protection against maladies (such as cholera); old age; weekly Torah readings; dedication of a home; eulogies; redemption of the first-born son; 70 names of Israel and of the Torah.
