- Title:
- Draft materials for Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor's work 'Mover/Driver of Time' מסייר אל זמאן
- Scope & Content:
-
Drafts of sections of Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor's (HED’s) ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן. The work is an encyclopaedic presentation of Jewish ideas, religious practice, wisdom, ethics, and civilisation, contextualised by aspects of world civilisation. Most of these folios have the Judeo-Arabic word NḲLT / נקלת written on top. In context, this seems to mean ‘copied’, viz. copied from these draft sheets into the fair copy, preserved, in 10 notebooks, in MS Or 17088.
Or 17090 (1): [1] Translation into Judeo-Arabic of the Jewish marriage contract; [2] list of 9 items (including a magic square) in Judeo-Arabic; [3] Early draft of the opening of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן, with the Hebrew original and the Judeo-Arabic translation in parallel columns.
Or 17090 (2): Draft of the opening section and some subsequent sections of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן, with the Hebrew original and the Judeo-Arabic translation in parallel columns. The first two sheets were numbered 1 and 2 by HED; but the rest of the sheets were not numbered by him, and are here ordered randomly.
Or 17090 (3): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: The Week; The Sabbath.
Or 17090 (4): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: The Year Cycle: The 4 special Torah readings: Shekels, Remember, Heifer, and New Month; Passover – Festival of Matsah (unleavened bread); ‘Omer; Shavu‘ot; the Month of Elul and repentance; Rosh Hashanah; Repentance; Sukot and lulav; and the verso of the final sheet segues from the year cycle into daily practices: reciting the Shema‘ and prayer.
Or 17090 (5): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: Daily religious performance and mindset: Prayer; Tefillin; Ancient Israel.
Or 17090 (6): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: Fundamentals of Torah and observance. Folio 9 is a gloss noted at the bottom of folio 8, but the main text runs from folio 8 to folio 10.
Or 17090 (7): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: Ethics, emotions: anger; despondency / depression; ethics; humility; contentment; anger; asking for forgiveness; wise stories. From folio 3, the folios are numbered 22 – 26, and 29 – 33. Folio 9 begins in Hebrew, with a note on translation into Arabic.
Or 17090 (8): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: Ethical practices as part of the Jewish religion: honouring one’s parents; Derekh Erets / דרך ארץ = decency; tsedaḳah / צדקה often translated ‘charity’, but more correctly ‘righteousness’; welcoming wayfarers / guests; not speaking badly of others; acts of loving-kindness / interest-free loans; visiting the sick;
Or 17090 (9): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: Judeo-Arabic translation of the Jewish marriage contract, followed by other items.
Or 17090 (10): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: Great Jewish personalities (Talmudic sages), their stories, and their instructions on how to live, for example, ‘Torah is good with Derekh Erets / דרך ארץ’ (literally ‘the way of the land’).
Or 17090 (11): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: Great innovators in world civilisation: Johannes Gutenberg; Christopher Colombus.
Or 17090 (12): Draft of sections of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: General / world / civic wisdom and ethics; ethical parables and tales from world literature.
Or 17090 (13): Draft of section of HED’s ‘Mover of Time’ / מסייר אל זמאן: folios numbered 4 – 8 of an uncategorised subsection.
