Gleanings - Exegesis
- Scope & Content:
- A collection of exegetical insights, going beyond the basic meaning of the texts into the realm of homiletics, on select passages from the Pentateuch, Esther, Lamentations, hafṭarot (= readings from the Prophets, chanted after the liturgical Pentateuchal readings), Psalms, and Ethics of the Fathers. Compiled by Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor (HED).
In addition to the text written in the originally marked margins of the pages numbered by HED, many comments have been added in margins and on flyleaves. Also, after having moved on to homilies on subsequent biblical passages, HED often goes back to earlier-occurring biblical passes and offers homilies on them.
HED alphanumerically numbered, from א to לב (equaling from 1 - 32), the pages originally intended for his text. Eventually, however, he wrote on the flyleaves, too, which are included in our updated foliation but not in his numeration.
Caption above the opening of the originally-planned area of text, HED's page 1 (= folio 2a): חידושים משִׁ"לִי זעירא = 'Novel insights from the small Shi.Li.', or 'Novel insights by me, the small one'.
