Sermon for the 'Great Sabbath' (the Sabbath before Passover), 5681 Anno Mundi
Derush le-Shabbat ha-Gadol Shenat H.T.R.P.'Alef
- Scope & Content:
- Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor's (HED's) sermon for Shabat ha-Gadol / שבת הגדול = the 'Great Sabbath', viz. the Sabbath before Passover, 5681 Anno Mundi (= 1921 CE).
In the caption, HED points out that since the year is intercalated (sometimes called a 'leap year'), the Sabbath Torah reading is on the purity laws: מעוברת שבת טהרות.
Invocation: 'This have I begun, with the help of my Rock and my Redeemer' / וזה החלי בעזרת צורי וגואלי.
Epigraph: Leviticus 14:11, 'The purifying priest stations the man being purified and them before the Lord, at the opening of the Tent of Meeting'. (The final phrase is reiterated, in reverse order, in verse 23.)
Lemma: Midrash (found in Yalḳuṭ Shim‘oni / ילקוט שמעוני on the Prophets, no. 559) on Micha 7:15, 'As the days of your going out of Egypt shall I show wonders to him': I shall show to the descendants [in the future redemption] what I did not show to the ancestors [in the redemption from Egypt].
10-stanza poem, each line of which begins and ends with 'Gadol' / גדול = 'great'.
Body of the sermon, on the theme of this special Sabbath: the first words embody an acrostic of the Tetragrammaton, 'The matter is known, and the concept is well-known' / ידוע הדבר ומפורסם הענין.
