- Title:
- Interpretation of Ethics of the Fathers (Pirḳe Avot / פרקי אבות)
- Scope & Content:
-
Traditionally, the mishnaic tractate containing Rabbinic ethics, Pirḳe Avot / פרקי אבות = Ethics (lit. Chapters) of the Fathers, is studied on Sabbath afternoons of the weeks between Passover and Shavuot, one chapter per week. In the Mishnah, this tractate consists of five chapters. However, since the period between Passover and Shavuot includes six Sabbaths (always in the Diaspora, where an extra festival-day is added to Passover, at its end; in the Land of Israel, where no extra festival-day is added, it sometimes consists of seven Sabbaths), a sixth chapter, consisting of extra-mishnaic teachings, was added. Some have the custom of studying the work every Sabbath afternoon throughout the Summer. This study has taken on a quasi-liturgical status. Contained in this shelfmark are Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor’s compilations of explanations and homilies on this work, as well as a fragment of a Judeo-Arabic translation of the work.
Or 17108 (1): Six sheets of paper, one for each chapter of Ethics of the Fathers, containing a compilation of explanations on passages from the work. Sources cited include: Zekhut Avot / זכות אבות; Midrash Shemu’el / מדרש שמואל; Avot u-gevurot / אבות וגבורות; Binah la-‘itim; Derekh yesharah / דרך ישרה; Ma‘aśe ‘Avot / מעשה עבות (possibly error for: Ma‘aśe ’Avot / מעשה אבות); Ya‘arot devash / יערות דבש; and oral transmission (lit. ’I heard [it]’ / שמעתי).
Or 17108 (2): Homiletic interpretation of mishnaic material from Ethics of the Fathers chapter 1.
Or 17108 (3): Explanations on items from Ethics of the Fathers chapter 2.
Or 17108 (4): Explanations on items from Ethics of the Fathers chapter 4.
Or 17108 (5): Explanations on items from Ethics of the Fathers chapter 4, including an illustrative story about Rabbi Sa‘adya Gaon. Sources cited include ‘Arve naḥal / ערבי נחל.
Or 17108 (6): Ethics of the Fathers, in which the Hebrew text of each mishna is followed by its Judeo-Arabic translation. Printed. Fragment containing pages 3 – 86 of the original, covering chapter 1, end of translation of mishnah (2), ‘Simeon the Just was among the last of [the men of] the Great Assembly …’ / שמעון הצדיק היה משיירי [אנשי] כנסת הגדולה …, through close to the end of chapter 6, translation of the teaching that begins, ‘The Holy Blessed One acquired five acquisitions in His world …’ / חמשה קנינים קנה לו הקדוש ברוך הוא בעולמו …, followed by the catchword ‘All’ / וכל, anticipating the final teaching.
