Papers consisting primarily of letters from the philosopher, poet and activist Edward Carpenter to a "Mrs Casey", a friend of Carpenter's from Nottingham. The letters describe Carpenter's life, his retirement from lecturing, his plans to write, his thoughts on democracy, the death of his father, his life as a farmer and a visit to New York, including a meeting with Walt Whitman.
Also included are a number of other items, including a Christmas card from Carpenter to Mrs Casey, a cast list for two short plays put on in Nottingham in 1877, one written by Carpenter and both featuring Mrs Casey, an undated note on family history, and a number of newspaper cuttings, mostly undated.
The cuttings consist of an obituary of a Carpenter, an unattributed article on Babylonian legends, an unattributed article on a film of Mount Everest, an unattributed article on Peruvian rams being introduced into Leeds, an unattributed translation of a Japanese poem, an unattributed article on the discovery of a Babylonian text, an article on the Dog River Caves of Lebanon, an article on the origins of Stonehenge, and three annotated articles on admissions to Oxford University, Cambridge University and the Woolwich Military Academy.
