Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor's (HED’s) sermons on drought, illness, and recovery
Or 17112 (1): Sermon for the drought, 10th of the Month of Shevaṭ 5669 [Anno Mundi = Monday, 1 Feb 1909 CE], week of Torah portion Be-Shalaḥ. The lemma is a passage from Exodus Rabbah 21:4, on the week’s Torah reading. The Midrash begins with a lemma from the week’s pericope, ‘Why do you cry out to Me?’ (Exodus 14:15). The theme is that God listens to the prayers of every person. The original context is Israel’s cry when they were trapped between the sea and Pharoah’s army. The present context is to cry out to God to end the drought.
Or 17112 (2): Sermon for the drought, Thursday of the Torah portion Yitro, 20th of the Month of Shevaṭ [5669 Anno Mundi = 11 Feb 1909 CE], after the morning prayers. The lemma is a group of extracts from Exodus Rabbah 28, on the week’s Torah reading. The Midrash begins with a lemma from the week’s pericope, ‘I am the Lord your God [Who brought you forth from the Land of Egypt]’ (Exodus 20:2), and discusses the special connection between God and the People of Israel.
Or 17112 (3): Sermon: quest to reconcile God and the People: God should end the drought; and the people should live a divinely meaningful life. Epigraph: ‘This is the teaching regarding the ‘olah [= burnt offering], it is the ‘olah’ (Leviticus 6:2). HED makes reference to midrash on this verse, but he did not copy the text of the midrash. Next, he offers a rhymed plea to God to end the drought and send rain. Then he addresses the congregation, opening with a phrase that forms an acrostic of the Tetragrammaton: ‘Let the men understand; let the women listen’ / יבינו האנשים וישמעו הנשים, exhorting them to live ultimately meaningful lives.
Or 17112 (4): Sermon: ethical / spiritual antidote to illness. Begins in the middle of the topic, ‘Now, let us go back and see, regarding the third affliction that comes from the illness that frightens us: Does it have an easy cure …?’
Or 17112 (5): ‘Sermon that I delivered at the dinner for the beginning of the month, Thursday, beginning of the month Kisleṿ 5648 [Anno Mundi = 17 November 1887 CE], before the sages and rabbis of our city, Baghdad, may God protect it, for the lovingkindness that blessed God did with me – when, this past Elul, I was [in the City Ḥy ?], where I took ill. God sent me His help from the sanctuary (cf. Psalm 20:2): He healed me and He made me live. May it be His will that he prolong my days in good and my years in pleasantness. May this be His will; Amen! After an opening lemma from Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 60b, ‘“A person is obligated to bless [God] for bad similarly to for good; and for good similarly to for bad.” What is the meaning …’, HED opens with a phrase that forms an acrostic of the Tetragrammaton: ‘Let the listeners understand, and let the wise intelligize’ / יבינו השומעים וישכילו החכמים.
