- Title:
- Essays on Theology, from the archive of Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor: Reward & Punishment - in This World or the Next? Theodicy
- Scope & Content:
-
Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor’s (HED’s) collection of essays on Theology: Reward & Punishment; Human Capacity for Change; Theodicy.
Note: Alongside his extracts from the works of others, HED sometimes includes contributions attributed to עשי”ר, a reference to himself as made clear in MS Or 17111 (4), where he gives an expanded form of this attribution, ממני איש עש”יר = ‘by me, the man עש”יר = ‘Ayin-Ś-Y-R or ‘Ayin-Sh-Y-R. I believe that the former is correct, and that it stands for: Ezra Sassoon yiḥye Reuben / עזרא ששון יחיה ראובן = ‘Ezra Sassoon, may he live, [son of] Reuben’.
Or 17111 (1): Digested by HED from Rabbi Israel Jacob Algazi’s work Shema‘ Ya‘aḳov / שמע יעקב, on pericopes Be-reshit / בראשית, Noah / נח, and Ṿa-Yigash / ויגש: Using the method of Talmudic reasoning, is observance of the mitsṿot / מצוות (divine commandments) rewarded in this world? Compare next item [MS Or 17111 (2)].
Or 17111 (2): Digested by HED from Rabbi Israel Jacob Algazi’s work Shema‘ Ya‘aḳov / שמע יעקב: Using the method of Talmudic reasoning, is observance of the mitsṿot / מצוות (divine commandments) rewarded in this world? Compare previous item [MS Or 17111 (1)].
Or 17111 (3): Recto: on Proverbs 10:22, ‘It is the blessing of the Lord that makes one wealthy’: not only does God restore the property (etc.) of the righteous, but He increases it by means of the disruption – e.g. Haman’s house is given to Mordechai. Verso, on Psalm 22:5-6, ‘It is in You that our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and You delivered them; they cried out to You and escaped; in You did they trust, and they did not have shame.’ This alludes to both overall salvation as well as to salvation particularised to the situation of the three Patriarchs. After each brief essay, there is an attribution to עשי”ר, = HED.
Or 17111 (4): Sermon booklet on the Talmudic lemma (Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 60b), ‘One is obligated to bless God for the bad as for the good, and for the good as for the bad’. Body of sermon begins with phrase that gives the Tetragrammaton in acrostic, ‘The listeners will understand and the wise will intelligise’ / יבינו השומעים וישכילו החכמים. Draws on multiple works, including: Te’ume Tsivyah / תאומי צבייה; and ‘Olelot Efrayim / עוללות אפרים; in addition to making his own contributions, indicated by ממני איש עש”יר = ‘by me, the man ‘Ayin-Ś-Y-R’; and simply איש עש”יר.
