- Title:
- Historical Timeline: Dating Jewish and world events and notable persons
- Scope & Content:
- Or 17064 (1). Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor's (HED's) dating of 67 world events back from the year 5684 Anno Mundi (= 1923/4 CE), including events of general and Jewish significance, and the birth of people of renown. For the first item, HED gives the corresponding Anno Mundi year: [the year 5684 is] 4027 years since the Flood [which occurred in the year] 1656 [Anno Mundi]. (Significantly, the identification of the year of the Flood is a matter of interpretive dispute.) The most recent item: [the year 5684 is] 15 years since the aeroplane. Added below, in the spidery script characteristic of HED's final years: [the year 5684 is] 45 years since the telephone [which was introduced in] 1877 [CE]. Only in the first and last cases does HED give the year, whether AM or CE, in which the event occurred.
Or 17064 (2). Side A: List of the Anno Mundi years for various events and the flourishing of various Talmudic sages, and associated calculations. E.g.: 3408, the beginning of the building of the Second Temple; 3416, its completion; 3413, Ezra went up [to the Land of Israel] from Babylonia; Men of the Great Assembly; 3445, Simeon the Just [last of the Men of the Great Assembly]; 3500, Yoḥanan the High Priest; 3766, Shamaya and Avtalion ... etc. A note at the bottom of the page seems to indicate that HED made these calculations in order to justify his chronology [see previous item, MS Or 17064 (1)] to his contemporary and friend Rabbi Joseph Hayyim Shrem / יוסף חיים שרים [see note to MS Or 17077, poem no. 1], as well as to Rabbi Fishman [presumably Rabbi Judah Leib ha-Kohen Fishman [surname later changed to Maimon], a founder of the religious Zionist movement Mizrachi, who visited Baghdad and was photographed there with a group including HED] and Rabbi פאנזיל [= Panigel?] and another party, ???? Saul. Side B: the number 1656 [the Anno Mundi year that HED gave for the Flood]; and calendar calculations.
