The ASLIB Microfilm Service was established in April 1942 and ran until December 1945. Its purpose was to provide microfilm copies, or enlarged prints, of journals reaching the UK from enemy and enemy‐occupied countries. These would otherwise be inaccessible to the majority of research workers.
The service created 'Contents Lists' of the periodicals available and the articles contained within them. Researchers used these lists to select and order the articles or issues they required. The periodicals and articles named in the lists are mainly German, but also include some other European, Russian, American and Canadian ones.
The Contents Lists divide the periodicals in to groups:
Groups in 1942:
- Group 1, Pure Science
- Group 2, Medicine
- Group 3, Engineering
- Group 4, Agriculture
- Group 5, Chemical Technology
- Group 6, Metallurgy
Groups in 1943 and 1944:
- Group A, Physical Science
- Group B, Biological Science
- Group C, Medicine and Veterinary Science
- Group D, Engineering and Industry
This collection includes all of the available Contents Lists. Six microfilms are included as an example of the microfilms that could be obtained from the ASLIB Microfilm Service. A folder of papers relating to both the ASLIB and the ASLIB Microfilm Service is also included.
