- Title:
- Sermons and homilies on passages from the Pentateuch: multiple Pentateuchal books per item
- Scope & Content:
- Sermons and homilies on the Pentateuch: each item addresses passages from multiple books of the Pentateuch. Written or collected by Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor (HED).
Or 17118 (1): Fragment. Recto: By Rabbi Elijah ha-Kohen Dweck / אליהו בן נסים הכהן דוויך, Birkat ’Eliyahu / ברכת אליהו (Livorno 5553 Anno Mundi (= 1792/3 CE), Genesis items 45 & 46, folio 5, side v, column b – top folio 6, side r, column a), interpreting the story of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and Adam and Eve’s aspiration to become like God. Verso: On Moses’ shattering of the Tablets. Unidentified handwriting.
Or 17118 (2): [1] Deeper reason that Moses and Aaron did not lead the Israelites into the Promised Land; [2] Chronology of Jethro’s arrival at the Israelites’ encampment in the Wilderness. Edge of verso, upside down, in Judeo-Arabic: ג’אוובנאנו ۲٦ כסליו ٦۸۰ = ‘Answer us’(?), 26 Kisleṿ, 5680 = 18 December 1919.
Or 17118 (3): Comments on select verses from Deuteronomy 21:10, Pericope Ki Tetse / כי תצא to the end of the Pentateuch, then moving to the beginning of the Pentateuch, through Genesis, Pericope Toledot / תולדות , 27:40. Date: folio 5r, bottom, in a box, in a mix of Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic, זה כתבתי שנת תרן יום ٥ פי חודש חשון = I wrote this in the year 5650, day 5 of the month of Ḥeshṿan = 30 Oct. 1889. The handwriting is small, with no attempt at neatness. Most of the entries are brief, containing key phrases or words summarising or referring to larger items. Taken together with the small, handheld format, it is reasonable that HED used this as a memory device during public preaching. Often, HED cites multiple interpretations for a single verse or passage, sometimes coming back to them, even after several pages, after having cited other verses or passages in-between.
