- Title:
- Grant by Roger son of Alexander of Eakring to Rufford Abbey of land in Eakring
- Scope & Content:
-
Grant by Roger son of Alexander of Eakring to Rufford Abbey (Nottinghamshire), for his soul and those of his wife and children, of 4 acres of land in the territory of Eakring (Nottinghamshire), which Roger’s lord Ralph of Hereford gave to him for his service, and which Hermer held.
Because Roger lacks his own seal, he uses the seal of the collegiate church of St Mary, Southwell. For other examples of this practice, see Holdsworth, Rufford Abbey Charters, I, p. lxxix. For an example of the Southwell seal, see Birch, Catalogue of Seals, no. 4058.
Witnesses: Thomas, clerk of Eakring, John son of Geoffrey, Herbert son of Ase, William son of Walter, Robert son of Arkyll, Agamund of Karbert, Robert son of Hosgot.
Affixed with an imperfect seal of the collegiate church of St Mary, Southwell, lozenge, red, with the Virgin in a headdress and, long dress and cloak, seated, with the Child on her lap, her hands raised. ‘sigillum sancte de svella’.
Endorsements: ‘Rogerus de Eycringe’ (13th century); ‘Eiceringhe / Eckering / Nottinghamshire / S. D.’ (18th century).
This charter is seemingly not recorded in the cartulary of Rufford Abbey (Add MS 82958).
