Emendations to ʿAdi zahav
- Scope & Content:
- Emendations to Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor's (HED's) plain-sense commentary on the Pentateuch, plus fragment of earlier draft.
Or 17124 (1): Single sheet of paper containing items that Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor wished to add to the fair copy of his plain-sense Hebrew commentary to the Pentateuch, ‘Adi zahav, [side a] on the Book of Genesis (manuscript Or 17027), and [side b] on the Book of Deuteronomy (manuscript Or 17029). [side a] Pericope Bereshit / בראשית: Genesis 1:11, meaning of the Hebrew term deshe / דשא; ibid. 2:23, connotation of 'this time'; ibid. 3:12, connotation of seemingly extra word 'she'; ibid. v. 17, 'it is cursed'; ibid, ibid., 'you shall eat it'; ibid. v. 19, 'and unto dust shall you return'; ibid. v. 16, 'your longing will be for your husband'; ibid. 5:1, 'in the likeness of God'. Pericope Noaḥ / נח: Genesis 6:9, 'Noah walked with God'; ibid. 9:4, 'however, flesh with its soul, its blood, you shall not eat'; ibid. v. 8, 'to Noah and to his sons'. Pericope Lekh-lekha / לך לך: Genesis 16:8, 'I am fleeing'; 18:29, 'I shall not do'; Pericope Toledot / תולדות: Genesis 25:33, 'promise'; [side b] Pericope ‘Eḳev / עקב: Deuteronomy 9:3, 'it is He who will destroy them, and it is He who will subdue them'. End of sheet.
Or 17124 (2): Single sheet of paper, approximately 222 mm x 141 mm, written in light black and brown ink. Items that Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor wished to add to the fair copy of his plain-sense Hebrew commentary to the Pentateuch, ‘Adi zahav, on the Book of Exodus (manuscript Or 17028).
Or 17124 (3): Single sheet of paper containing items that Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor wished to add to the fair copy of his plain-sense Hebrew commentary to the Pentateuch, ‘Adi zahav, on the Book of Leviticus (manuscript Or 17029), Pericope Shemini.1. Side A, column A: Nuanced readings of the account of the eighth day of the dedication of the Tabernacle, Leviticus chapters 9 and 10. [a] Leviticus 9:1, 'Moses called to Aaron' (Hebrew le-'Aharon / לאהרן), cross-references comment to ibid. 1:1, explaining linguistic nuance of 'calling to', Hebrew ל / L, citing [Mendelssohn's] Bi'ur / ביאור. [b] Why it was sufficient to eat the special portions mentioned in Leviticus 10:14 in a place of purity, whereas the special portions mentioned in verses 12-13 needed to be eaten in a holy place, citing [Mendelssohn's] Bi'ur / ביאור. [c] Who was permitted to eat the rest of the meat of the peace offering, aside from the special portions mentioned in Leviticus 10:14? [d] Why is it pointed out in Leviticus 9:4 that the grain offering is to be kneaded with oil? References Rashi's commentary. 2. Side A, column B: Leviticus 11:1 states, 'The Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron'. It is presumably this statement that prompts HED to reconcile the following two Rabbinic traditions: [a] 18 times, a divine fiat was specially addressed to Moses and Aaron together; and [b] 13 times that a command was given to Moses and Aaron for the Israelites, it was addressed to Moses only, who was to convey it to Aaron.3. Side B, column C: 'Omission, relevant to folio 32 [on Leviticus], middle of the folio, before verse 5: "The camel, for it chews its cud" [Leviticus 11:4]. It should have said: for it does not have cloven hooves ...'4. Side B, column D: Cf. the lists of kosher fauna in Leviticus chapter 11. 'Concerning beasts, the impure [viz. non-kosher] [species] are many while the pure [viz. kosher] ones are few; and thus the kosher ones are enumerated [in the parallel passage in Deuteronomy chapter 14]. However, regarding birds, the pure [viz. kosher] [species] are in the majority; and therefore the impure [viz. non-kosher] [species] are enumerated [in both Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14]. End of sheet.
Or 17124 (4): Fragment of earlier draft of HED's plain-sense Torah commentary (before it was named), covering Genesis 49:10-11. Substantial differences on verse 10, and substantial identity on verse 11.
Or 17124 (5): Found in HED's fair copy of ‘Adi zahav. Recto: explanatory gloss, not in the printed version of ‘Adi zahav, on Deuteronomy 31:3, ‘He, the Lord your God, will pass before you. He will destroy …. He, Joshua, will pass before you …’. Verso: Judeo-Arabic: dinner menu and list of household items.
Or 17124 (6): Explanation by HED (indicated by ע”ד = Ezra Dangoor) to Deuteronomy 9:4-6 (mis-labelled as 9:7?), ‘Do not say … that it is on account of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me … and on account of the wickedness of the nations … Not on account of your righteousness … but on account of the wickedness of the nations …’. Compare printed edition of ‘Adi zahav, vol. 2, pp. 238-239.
Or 17124 (7): Small notebook with items that HED was thinking of adding to his plain-sense Torah commentary, added to over the years. Some include source citations. Some but not all of these items ended up in the printed edition of ‘Adi zahav. These additions occur in clusters: Cluster 1, on folios 1 - 2r, multiple additions on Genesis chapters 1, 2, 8, 19, 29, and [in different ink and writing] 35; Cluster 2, on folio 3r, multiple additions on Leviticus chapter 16 (including one from Abarbanel) and one on Genesis 16:[11]; Cluster 3, on folio 3v, on the binding of Isaac, and particularly Genesis 22:7; Cluster 4, bottom folio 3v, on Genesis 18:27, from Keli Yaḳar / כלי יקר; and Cluster 5, folio 4r, on Genesis 25:27, being HED's own insight, indicated by ע"ד.
