- Title:
- Typescript journal of a mountaineering holiday in Switzerland
- Scope & Content:
- Record of a two month mountaineering holiday of Lady Hermione Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, her sister, Victoria, Nelly Wyndham, and a Miss Sutcliffe between Aug-Sep 1893. The writing appears to have been shared among the group as each member of the party is mentioned at different points and the tone is humorous and tongue-in-cheek. The group was guided by two brothers called Wilson, local clergymen, who took it upon themselves to ensure the party was adequately attired, including fixing nails to the women's' boots. Includes descriptions of traversing the Aletsch glacier, the largest in the Alps, and of the women's experience of rock climbing, and reference to their climbing the Fusshorn. The journal relates a meeting with Prof. [John] Tyndall, [physicist and mountaineer], in the village of Belalp, whose advice was to drink a bottle of champagne at the summit of the particular mountain they were attempting that day. The party abstained owing to the teetotal stance of the Wilsons.
The volume also contains fifteen pen sketches, some coloured, by different hands, of people the party met and the situations they found themselves in, and four mounted photographs including the Matterhorn and Zermatt (two photographs are attributed to a 'Mr Duncan').
