- Scope & Content:
-
Transcript of, and notes relating to, correspondence from soprano Geraldine Farrar to a fan, Harold Burro, spanning 47 years.

Includes introduction by Burro, and interspersed commentary by Burro throughout, providing contextual information, biographical notes about Farrar and himself, and sometimes summarises his replies to Farrar (which are not included in this collection). Farrar’s letters include anecdotes about working with musicians such as Lotte Lehmann, Lilli Lehmann (Farrar’s teacher) Arturo Toscanini, Maria Jeritza, Maria Callas, Rosa Ponselle, Alfred Piccaver, Mary Garden, Enrico Caruso, Joan Sutherland, Kirsten Flagstad, Renata Tebaldi, Agnes de Milde, Feodor Chaliapin. Further topics including touring, recording, politics, and the changing modern world. In early letters, Burro is addressed as ‘Mr. McLenan’, which he explains in the introduction.
- ff. 231-237: handwritten notes on 7 foolscap pages, including a list very briefly summarising letter contents, and a list of photographs and material. These were perhaps made with publication of the letters in mind.
