Title:

Frederick Delius: drafts for two movements of ‘A Mass of Life’, and sketch for an unknown orchestral work

Scope & Content:

(1). ff. 1-3. Autograph composition drafts for two movements from ‘Eine Messe des Lebens’ (‘A Mass of Life’), Delius’s large-scale work based on Nietszche (Also sprach Zarathustra). Completed 1905. The musical material is on one partial bifolium and one complete bifolium. Both relate to the fragmentary short score manuscript at MS Mus. 1745/2/13/3.

Folio 1 is the second leaf of a bifolium, originally paginated 3-4. The short score is for part of the fourth number in Part One of the work (‘Wehe mir! Wo ist die Zeit hin?’).
Folios 2-3 are a bifolium containing the first part of the fourth number in Part Two of the work (‘Mittags / Prelude’). The passage corresponds to rehearsal figures 102 to 104 in the published score, although in a different form. It leads directly into what is now MS Mus. 1745/2/13/3, ff. 175-178.

(2). ff. 4-9. Autograph manuscript for an unknown work for orchestra. Thought to date from around 1912 to 1916 based on the paper used and works with similar orchestrations. The thematic material is not otherwise known and the manuscript may represent an abandoned piece or one that ended up taking another form. There are 12 leaves in all, in a complete set of 3 nested bifolios.
