Draft short score for the ‘Scherzo’ for orchestra, originally intended as a movement for a symphony. Covering six pages in all, on systems of two or three staves. Holst began sketching the movement in August 1933 and the orchestral score was completed in 1934.
For early sketches for the piece, including other movements of the planned symphony, see Add MS 47835. For the autograph full score of this 'Scherzo', see Add MS 57908, ff. 25-50.

- User Conditions:
- Custodial History:
- Prior to auction, the manuscript was owned by Roger Tolman (d. 2022). From lists of his collection, the executor of his estate suggested that this is likely to have been acquired by him before July 1964. An extract from a dealer’s catalogue included with the manuscript (f. i) also suggests that it was sold around then. Before this, the manuscript had been given by Imogen Holst to ‘Jim’ in 1951. This is almost certainly James Butt, a composer and later music producer, who studied with Imogen Holst at Dartington in the 1950s.
