- Collection of glass plate negatives and photographs taken by Joseph Gaye in Nepal and India, 1888-1899. The collection is in three parts. Photo 1424/1, 91 glass plate negatives, 1888-1899. Photo 1424/2, Five cellulose acetate negatives, probably taken around these dates or later. Photo 1424/3, 32 albumen prints mounted on loose pages of the original album. One privately printed book for reference purposes and 211 digital images.
Gaye, Joseph, [b. Northfleet, Kent 1852; d. Lemberg, Canada 1926]. Amateur photographer. Enlisted with the 4th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade in 1870. Gaye served as a private and transported to India in 1873. He left the army in 1882 to lead several Indian military bands. In 1888, he moved to Kathmandu, Nepal, to serve as bandmaster to the Royal Nepalese Army and in 1892 became bandmaster to three viceroys of India: Marquess of Lansdowne (1888-1894); Earl of Elgin (1892-1899) and Lord Curzon of Kedleston (1899). During this time (1888-1899), he produced photographs of Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley, Burma and India. The photographs of Burma are reproduced in the privately printed publication; these are not part of the British Library's holdings.
