- Scope & Content:
- A Hindustani translation of the Qur'an, with notes, by Shah 'Abd al-Qadir of Delhi. Accompanied by the Arabic text.
Preface begins:
الہیی شکر تیرے احسان کا ادا کرون کس زبان سے کہ ھماریی زبان گویا کیی اپنے نام کر اور دل کو روشنی دیی اپنے کلام کر
Shah 'Abd al-Qadir was the third son of Shah Wali Allah ibn 'Abd al-Rahim, a celebrated Muhaddis of Delhi, and author of several Persian works on Islamic law and of a Persian translation of the Qur'an. The title of the Hindustani translation expresses the date of its completion, i.e. A.H. 1205 (A.D. 1790-91).
The translation and notes are written in Nasta'liq after each verse of the text, which is in Naskhi fully pointed. This translation of the Qur'an is held in high estimation, and is generally printed between the lines of the text, with the notes on the margin. An edition of the translation (without the text) transcribed in Roman characters with an English preface and introduction by the Rev. T. P. Hughes, and an index by the Rev. E. M. Wherry, was printed at Ludhiana, 1876. Another edition of the index, in Persian characters was published in Ludhiana, 1881, under the title A'inah i Qur'an.
This copy contains a translation of the first four Surahs only, and is without any colophon.
