- Scope & Content:
- Edward Clive Bayley (1821-1884), College at Haileybury 1839, went to India 1942, deputy commissioner of Gujurat 1849. Returned to England 1854. Recalled to India during the Mutiny in 1857 and remained in India holding judicial roles. Appointed as Indian Home Secretary, 1862-1872, became a member of the supreme council in 1873 and retired in 1878. The collection comprises his letters to his wife, Emily Anne Theophila Metcalfe, the daughter of Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe (younger brother of Sir Charles Metcalfe). Many sent during the Indian Mutiny in 1857-58 giving descriptions of the event. A number of other letters dating up to 1876 refer in particular to the administration of Lord Northbrook and his resignation. Other material includes a typed copy of a letter from Susanna Sophia Debonnaire (granmother of Emily), and some typed copies of letters from Georgiana, Lady Campbell (sister of Emily) to her sisters in England describing her experiences in Simla during the Mutiny. Also includes several offprints of Sir Edward's papers and articles (including his addresses as chancellor of the University of Calcutta, 1872-74, and six articles from the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, most on Indian coinage, and a photograph of 'the Begum Zinat Mahal, chief wife of the King of Delhi 1857', taken when a prisoner after the Mutiny'.
