This section (1v-51r) of Or 14396 contains the Divan of Ahmed Azmi of Amid (Diyarbakır), who died in 1247 AH/1831 CE.
Azmi was born in Diyarbakır and received a good education, achieving a strong command of Arabic and Persian. He travelled extensively, visiting Istanbul, Erzurum, Bitlis, Damascus, Iraq, and the Hejaz. He passed away in Diyarbakır in 1247 AH/1831 CE, and was buried by the tomb of Bolulu Hüseyin Efendi outside the Mardin Gate. Along with his Divan, he also composed a tabirname in mesnevi form titled Miftahu’l-ma‘ani (Erdoğan, ‘AZMÎ’).
The Divanconsists of: a preface (dibace) in prose (ff 1v-3r); 167 gazel (3v-41r); 14 kıt‘a (41r-42r); 3 tahmis written on the gazeller of Nâbî, Râsih, and Bâkî (42v-44r); 1 muhammes (44r); 4 müseddes (44v-47r); 1 tahmis written on the gazeller of İlhami (47r-47v); 2 kaside devoted to Prophet Muhammad and one to Prophet Zekeriyyâ respectively (47v-48v); 12 square-shaped visual poems (48v-49v), 19 muamma (50r-50v), and 3 lügaz (50v-51r). The order of these poems is different in two other copies (294 and 295) found in Istanbul’s Millet Kütüphanesi. These also contain 1 murabba, 1 terkib-i bend not found in the present copy, as well as 1 additional kaside and 3 additional lügaz. On the other hand, they contain 3 müseddes rather than the 4 in the present copy.
Preface begins (1v):
(Besmele) Hamd ü sipas ve sena-yı bi-kıyas ol mürettib-i divan-ı mümkinat ve mürekkeb-i ecza-yı kainat mübdi‘-i kevn ü mekan…
Poetry begins (3v):
Eyle tevfikin bana ya Rab refik ü reh-nüma * Salik-i na-dide-rahım yok delil ü pişva
Ends (51r):
Azmiya marifet ettin izhar * Edemez ehl-i ma‘arif inkar. Temmetü’d-divan bi-avni’llahi’l-meliki’l-azizi’l-allam
A note on 103v suggests that the copy was completed in Diyarbakir on 7 Nisan (April) [1]922 CE (9 Saban 1340 AH).
