Cumberland, Burlington and Halifax Papers.
75351-75371. Althorp Papers. Vols. li-lxxi. Papers of the Earls of Cumberland and Burlington and the Marquesses of Halifax; temp. Henry VIII [1509]-18th cent. These original documents relating to individuals unconnected with the Spencer family, derive from the collections of historical documents, originals and transcripts, bequeathed to Georgiana, Countess Spencer, by her friend Rachel Lloyd in 1803, `to keep as long as she pleases, and then I desire she will give them to Lavinia, Countess Spencer, to whom I bequeath them forever' (see the extract from her will in Add. MS 75695, and her notebooks and transcripts in Add. MSS 75368-75387 below). Several of the documents have annotations in the hands of Rachel Lloyd and Georgiana, Countess Spencer, and there is a rough list of the papers by the latter at the end of Add. MS 75358 below; see also the letters from Lady Spencer to Caroline Howe of 22 Aug. 1803 and 25 June 1804 (Add. MSS 75658 and 75660), in which she describes the unpacking and sorting of the papers. The papers probably have a common provenance, originally descending through Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Clifford, 5th Earl of Cumberland, and wife of Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Cork and 1st Earl of Burlington; and afterwards through Dorothy, daughter of William Savile, 2nd Marquess of Halifax, wife of Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington.
