75372-75387. Althorp Papers. Vols. lxxii-lxxxvii. Notebooks and papers of Rachel Lloyd, containing transcripts, extracts and compilations by her from letters, historical documents and published works of the 16th to the 18th centuries; late 18th-early 19th cent. For Rachel Lloyd (circa 1720-1803), housekeeper of Kensington Palace, see The Yale Edition of Horace Walpole's Correspondence, (1937-), X, p. 305, n. 8. As her letters to Lady Spencer (Add. MSS 75694-75695 below) indicate, she was a frequent visitor to aristocratic houses, where she had access to the family archives. Most of the transcripts from manuscript sources appear to have been taken from the papers of the Dukes of Devonshire and Buccleuch, the Marquesses of Downshire and Lansdowne, the Earl of Sandwich, and the Leveson Gower MSS at Trentham. Several are copies of, or closely related to, documents in the Cumberland, Halifax and Burlington Papers (Add. MSS 75351-75371) above; a comparison with the originals in these cases does not inspire confidence in the accuracy of the transcriber. The notebooks were bequeathed to Georgiana, Countess Spencer, and her daughter-in-law Lavinia, Countess Spencer, together with these original collections, by Rachel Lloyd in her will of 1803 (in Add. MS 75695).
