- Title:
- Papers of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford
- Scope & Content:
-
The papers relate to the following activities of North:
- Ceylon
- Travels in Europe and the Near East up to 1814
- The Ionian Academy, after 1814
- Affairs in England
- Notes and drafts of historical researches
A summary description is usually given of the contents of each volume, followed by a list of writers or recipients of letters and other related names.
The Ionian institution is referred to in the papers sometimes as 'Academy', sometimes as 'University'; see the note on terminology in Henderson, G P, The Ionian Academy, Scottish Academic Press (1988). In this description, following Henderson, the term, 'Academy' is used throughout. But see North's own differentiation between the two terms in a letter of 21 August 1824, in which he writes of telling Bishop Munster that ‘that learned body [the Academy] had ceased to exist’, and describes the Bishop as being ‘desirous of becoming a Corresponding Member of the University’.
