- Masulipatam was first visited by Captain Hippon of the Company's seventh voyage in 1611, who obtained permission to trade there. Masulipatam was the main seaport of the Kistna district, 215 miles north of Madras. A factory seems to have been set up in 1615 but because of oppression from the native Governor it was abandoned in 1628. It was re-established in 1631 and became the centre for trade on the Coromandel coast until the 1640s, when Fort St George took over this role. The factors continued, however, to send their own records to London, until Fort St George was raised to the rank of presidency in 1684. The factory was still in existence in 1709.
