- Administrative Context:
- A factory was established at Vizigapatam, a coastal town situated midway between Madras and Calcutta, in 1668. In 1689 the factory was seized by the Moguls and the factors murdered. The factory was restored the following year. The town was taken by the French during the Carnatic wars but remained under the control of native rulers until 1794, when the territory was ceded to the British.
