- Administrative Context:
- After the Russian occupation of Afghanistan in 1979, the future of the library of the British Legation in Kabul became a matter for discussion between the India Office Library and Records and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library. At the time the Legation Library was on loan to the British Institute of Afghan Studies in Kabul and it was agreed that if the situation deteriorated, the books would be returned to the Legation. In 1982, the Director of the Institute, Dr Pinder-Wilson, was detained and then expelled from Afghanistan. This prompted the FCO to move the library back to the Legation itself. In 1989 the British Legation in Kabul was closed and the library was sent back to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library. The books were then passed on to the India Office Library and Records, where the Kabul Legation files were already held (R/12). As the library comprises such a small collection, no index has been provided. The titles have been grouped under simple geographical headings, sub-divided according to subject as follows:
