- User Conditions:
- Administrative Context:
- The Indian Chaplaincies Board of the Church of England, appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, held its first meeting in the India Office, London, on 27 November 1914. The purpose of the Board was to recommend to the Secretary of State for India candidates to serve as chaplains in the Ecclesiastical Establishment in India and Burma. The candidate submitted an application form to the Secretary to the Board, which would then arrange for the candidate to appear before them. On receiving from the India Office notice of a vacancy, the Board recomended to the Secretary of State for India, for nomination, the candidate they considered most suitable. Generally, candidates for appointments to Indian Chaplaincies were required to be Priests over the age of 27 years, and who had been in Holy Orders for three years. The Indian Chaplaincies Board came to an end in January 1947 in consequence of the decision that all recruitment to the Indian Ecclesiastical Establishment should cease as a result of constitutional changes in India.
