- No papers survive before 1881 for the preparation in the India Office Political Department of replies to Parliamentay Questions and returns to Parliamentary Addresses. Between 1881 and 1892 some of the collections of papers (minuting, correspondence etc) on which replies and returns were based have survived but in the absence of registration it is not possible to tell how complete they are. Registration was introduced in 1893 and from that date the papers were bound up in volumes. A new registration sequence was begun in 1902.
