Numbered registers of payments

Scope & Content:

An explanation of the system involving the use of registers of payments is given at L/AG/9, p. 87.

Daily and monthly records of payments, arranged in numbered registers according to the main head of account: each book was maintained in alternate months to facilitate audit. The monthly totals were transferred into the Ledgers, Abstracts and Monthly Accounts with the Government of India. The system of numbered registers was introduced about 1860 but only the following volumes have survived. An earlier version of the system, without separate numbers can be seen in IOR/L/AG/1/14.

Lists of registers of payments on behalf of the Government of Burma can be found at IOR/L/AG/8/7; and registers of payments made by the High Commissioner of India at IOR/L/AG/41.
