GIOVANNI PAISIELLO: ‘La Pazza per Amore’, opera in two acts (to a libretto by Giambattista Lorenzi after Guiseppe Carpani’s translation of Benoît-Joseph Marsollier des Vivetières’ ‘Nina’); after 1790. Copy of the score, in ink, written on paper ruled with ten or twelve staves, in the same hand throughout, with a few annotations in pencil. For soloists, chorus, clarinets, bassoons, horns and strings. The opera was first performed in a one-act version with spoken dialogue at the Royal Palace at Caserta in 1789. The present version in two acts, also with spoken dialogue, was first performed at the Teatro dei Fiorentini, Naples in 1790, and widely thereafter. A later version, with musical recitatives probably not by Paisiello, was first performed at the Parma Carnival in 1793, and subsequently published in score (Paris: Chez Imbault, [1795?]). For later copies of the present version, see R.M.22.l.3.-4. and Add. 16029 (act two only). R.M.22.l.6. is a collection of arias from the opera, in a very similar or possibly identical hand to the present MSS. R.M.22.l.5. is a copy of the one-act version with the vocal parts written for wind instruments.
Two volumes. 210 x 273mm.
