C. PAPERS OF WILLIAM TRUMBULL THE YOUNGER
TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vols. CC-CCX. Correspondence and papers of William Trumbull, the younger; 1562-1687, n.d. Partly Latin, Greek, French, Italian and Portuguese. Partly drafts and fair copies. The younger Trumbull (1603-1678) was the eldest son of the diplomat of the same name, and the father of Sir William Trumbull. After an education at Sedan, Oxford and the Middle Temple (1613-1629) he travelled abroad with William, 5th Lord Paget. In 1635 he received a grant of the reversion of a Clerkship of the Signet, occupying the post from 1660 until his death in Mar. 1678. In 1638 he married, as his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of G. R. Weckherlin. The present papers are mostly personal in character and include some University exercises and correspondence with his family (Add. 72441-72444), notably an extensive series of letters from his father-in-law Weckherlin (Add. 72442). Among the miscellaneous material (Add. 72445-72448) are some items deriving from friends and family connections. The final volumes in this section (Add. 72449-72451) comprise papers deriving from the Office of the Secretary of State, 1658-1687, that partly relate to the work of the Signet Office during Trumbull's tenure. Almost all the papers are drawn from that portion of the Downshire collection not included in the arrangement of 1829, and they remained uncalendared by the Historical Manuscripts Commission. Their former locations within the archive are mostly pencilled on the back of each document. From Misc. XIX, XLIX and Add. 16, 19, 24, 37, 42, 46 and 52.
Eleven volumes, arranged as follows:
1. Family and personal correspondence and papers.
2. Family and miscellaneous papers.
3. Correspondence and papers from the Office of the Secretary of State.
