C. Diaries

The diaries cover the life of Grace Higgens in Norfolk, and in the service of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant in Gordon Square, London, and Charleston, Sussex, as well as during her retirement in Ringmer, Sussex. The diaries of the 1940s and 1950s are largely appointment diaries whereas the earlier and later volumes contain detailed entries written in retrospect. The volumes recount the activities of Grace's fellow servants, members of the Bloomsbury circle and family and friends, including: Barbara Bagenal, Clive, Vanessa, Julian and Quentin Bell, Angelica and David Garnett, Duncan Grant, John Higgens, Walter Higgens, John Maynard Keynes, Lydia Keynes née Lopokova, Paul Roche and Leonard and Virginia Woolf. The principal persons named in the diaries are included in the index to the present catalogue. The diaries have been listed in the order of the numbers on their covers. Add. 83207 and 83225 are diaries of Grace's mother, Bessie Germany.
