Letters (12) from Simeon Solomon to A. C. Swinburne; [Sept. 1869?]-[Nov. 1872]. The greater part of the letters concerns Swinburne's essay 'Simeon Solomon: Notes on his Vision of Love, and Other Studies', printed in the Dark Blue for July 1871 (A1753; 1755, ff. 11b-16; A4273). Other subjects are Solomon's paintings (1755, ff. 5b, 6; A4273), Swinburne's Songs before Sunrise, 1871 (1755, f. 12b), and Le Tombeau de Théophile Gautier, 1873, to which Swinburne contributed. Passing reference is made in many of the letters to Swinburne's interest in sado-masochism, but only one is devoted wholly to the subject (1755, ff. 3, 4). Also included is a letter from Edmund Gosse to T. J. Wise (30 Sept. 1920), instructing Wise to destroy the letters (1755, f. 19).
