JOURNALS,13 Nov. 1832-4 Aug.1836, being a continuation of those in Add. MSS. 33633-33728, which cover the years 1788-1832 and are copies by the Rector's brother, Russell Skinner, whose death at the end of the latter year brought to a close his work as a transcriber of his brother's diaries and caused the Rector to number the present volumes (which are in his autograph), as a fresh series. A copy by Russell Skinner of part of the first volume (down to 21 Nov. 1832, With a continuation down to 22 Nov. in the author's own hand) is in fact preserved in the last volume of the previous series (Add. MS. 33728, ff. 207-266). For Skinner's intentions as to the disposal of his journals see Add. MS. 33729, ff. 1 b-3. The present journals, originally written on loose sheets of paper and subsequently bound together by the author in their present form, are concerned mainly with personal and parochial matters and include accounts (illustrated with topographical and archaeological sketches, not always bound up in their correct
chronological position) of excursions to places in Somerset and adjacent counties (passim); of a visit to London, 14 May-19 June 1833 (Vol. I , ff. 87-284); and of a tour in Wales, 18 June-20 Aug. 1835 (Vols. XII-XVI); together with copies of a few sermons and some correspondence passim. Also included are some original letters addressed to Skinner, the names of the writers of which will be found in the Index to this Catalogue. Skinner's list of the drawings in the present series of journals will be found in Add. MS. 33730 (ff. 70-121), which is the second volume of his own index to the whole collection.
