B. HOLDERNESSE PAPERS
LEEDS PAPERS. Vols. LXXVIII-CLXXIV. Correspondence and papers, mostly official, of Robert Darcy, 4th Earl of Holdernesse, Secretary of State (b. 1718, d. 1778). He was Ambassador to Venice 1744-1746, Minister Plenipotentiary to the United Provinces 1749-1751, Privy Councillor 1751, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 18 June 1751-23 Mar. 1754, Secretary of State for the Northern Department 23 Mar. 1754-9 June 1757 and 29 June 1757-12 Mar. 1761, Governor to the Prince of Wales and Prince Frederick Apr. 1771-May 1776 and to the Princes William and Edward July 1772-May 1776. He went on a mission of condolence to the Princess of Orange Oct., Nov. 1751, and accompanied King George II to Hanover, Apr.-Sept. 1755. His papers passed to the family of the Dukes of Leeds through the marriage of his daughter and heiress, Amelia, to Francis Godolphin Osborne, Marquess of Carmarthen, 5th Duke of Leeds 1789. Ninety-seven volumes, classified as follows:-
I. Darcy family papers (3401, 3402). II. Papers as diplomatist (3403-3424). III. Papers chiefly as Secretary of State (3425-3490). Arranged as follows:-
(a) Home affairs (3425-3441). (b) Military and naval affairs (3442-3444). (c) Diplomatic and foreign affairs (3445-3483). (d) East Indian and colonial affairs (3484-3490).
