Almost all contain rough notes only, mostly in pencil, of melody and/or words, in some cases not taken down in full, from which it appears that these are books used while collecting. Not all items in these books appear in the main series (Add. 54187-54191), some books have been used on more than one occasion and some songs are recorded in more than one notebook; most, though, contain a core of songs that can be identified from the main series as having been collected at one period in one county. The books have accordingly been arranged chronologically and the related volume in the main series noted.
