'An Account of Russia, 1767', written by Sir George Macartney, Envoy Extraordinary to St. Petersburg [cr. Earl Macartney, 1794], as his official report on the historical, political, and economical state of the country (cf letter (f. i) from Joseph Planta, jun., Under Secretary of State, to [Frederick Augusta] Barnard [the King's Librarian], dated Foreign Office, i Nov. i82o); with an introduction addressed to Henry Seymour-Conway, Secretary of State, and numerous tables to illustrate the report. Two volumes. At the beginning of vol. i is a map of the Empire and at the end of vol. ii are the following appendices, viz. : (a) 'The present state of the Church of Russia, 1767'. f 42;-and (b) 'The new 38 Russian tariffe for I767', with copy of the Empress's edict of I Sept. 1766 and alphabetical lists of objects with their import or export duties, &c. f. 82. The report was privately and anonymously printed in 1768 with the same title and introduction (slightly added to, and said to be addressed 'to the King'), and the same tables, but without the appendix (b) on the tariff, while the appendix (a) on the Church is there attributed to the 'Rev. Mr. K--' [John Glen King, D. D., chaplain to the English Factory at St. Petersburg; cf. another copy of this MS. (minus the tables) in Add. MS. 337641. Paper ; ff. i6i, 128. Folio. 12 in. x 8 in. XVIII cent. Crimson morocco binding, slightly tooled.
