TREATISE on fortification, described (vol. i, f. 1) as 'Mémoire où l'on examine de quelle manière il convient de disposer les ouvrages d'un Front de Fortification'. Two volumes, vol. ii. containing the forty-one coloured plans. The name of the author, [Louis] de Cormontaigne (d. 1752), appears at the head of two anonymous supplements (vol. i, ff. 110, 143), each of which is described as 'Continuation du premier mémoire de Cormontaigne', and in the title of vol. ii, 'Plans et tracez apartenants au mémoire ms. où l'on examine . . . les ouvrages d'un Front de Fortification . . . par Mr de Cormontagne, Ingenieur, 1760'. In general the arrangement seems to resemble that of the MSS. described by Jähns, op. cit. p. 1755. Among the particular fortresses described or referred to are those at Fort Louis, Kehl, Strasburg, and Hüningen in Alsace, Fort Louis near Dunkirk, Lille, Arras, Mont-Royal on the Moselle, Douai, Aire, Saarlouis, Pfalzburg, Longwy, Maubeuge, Frankenthal, Schlettstadt, Menin, Toul, Freiburg-im-Breisgau, Metz, Landau, and Neu-Breisach.
Paper; ff. 168, 65. Folio. 15 in. x 91/2 in. and 15 in. x 111/2 in. A.D. 1760. Half-bound in red morocco, marbled sides.
