LETTER-BOOKS of Sir Robert Southwell during his negotiations in Portugal; 1665-1669. Three volumes. He was first despatched as Envoy Extraordinary in Feb. 1665 [6] to mediate a treaty between Spain and Portugal, in conjunction with Richard Fanshawe, Envoy at Madrid, and subsequently with the latter's successor, [Edward Montagu, 1st] Earl of Sandwich. He returned to England on the conclusion of the treaty [Vol. II., f. 15] in Feb. 1667 [8], but was sent again with new Instructions [Vol. III., f. 95] in May, 1668, finally returning in May, 1669. Vol. I.and Vol. II., ff. 1-162, contain his despatches, and Vol. III., ff. 1-93, letters to him (with a few to Sir R. Fanshawe and others), during his first negotiation; Vol. III., ff. 103-208, contains his despatches, and Vol. II., ff. 163-198, letters to him, during hip, second negotiation.
