JOURNALS of Major-General Charles George Gordon, C.B., during the siege of Kartoum, from 10 Sept. (the day on which Col. Stewart and Frank Power left Kartoum) to 14 Dec. 1884. Holograph. Six volumes. Paper. Folio. Each volume except the last was wrapped in a linen handkerchief, having a paper label inscribed by Gordon. These wrappers are now preserved in a separate case. The first of the inscriptions is quoted below, in the description of Vol. l., and the rest are similar. With appendices to Vols. I., IV., V. and VI., containing some of Gordon's correspondence witli the Mahdi and his lieutenants, and other documents. To each volume Gordon has prefixed the remark ( in some cases repeated two or three times): " To be pruned down, if published "; and he has drawn his pen through several passages, to mark them as not " official." The whole journal has, however, been published, together with translations of the appendices, practically without alteration (except for the omission of two or three passages which contain, in Sir H. W. Gordon's opinion, " no matter of public interest "), as The Journals of Major-Gen. C. G. Gordon, C.B., al Kartoum, London, 1885, with introduction and notes by A. E. Hake, and with a description of the MSS. (at p. lxiv.) by Sir H. W. Gordon. Vol. VI. has also been published in facsimile, General Gordon's Last Journal, London, 1885.
