OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE of Thomas Pelham Holles, Duke of Newcastle; 1697-1768. Thoms Pelham, son of Thomas, lst Lord Pelham, assumed the name of Holles in 1711, succeeded as 2nd Baron Pelham in 1712, was created Viscount Pelham and Earl of Clare in 1714, and Duke of Newcastle in 1715. He was Lord Chamberlain, 13 Apr. 1717- 2 Apr. 1724; Secretary of State for the Southern Department, 6 Apr. 1724-10 Feb. 1746; Secretary of State for the Northern Department, 14 Feb. 1746-23 Mar. 1754; First Lord of the Treasury, 18 Mar. 1754-11 Nov. 1756, and 2 July, 1757-26 May, 1762; and Lord Privy Seal, 15 July, 1765-30 July, 1766. The correspondence is arranged chronologically in Three Hundred and Seven Volumes. To the end of the year 1723 it is contained in one series; from 1724 to 1754 it is divided into two series: Home Correspondence, and Diplomatic Correspondence; from 1755 to 1768 it is again in one series.
