SUPPLEMENTARY NOVELLO COLLECTION. Vols. VI-VIII. Carl Maria von Weber: 'Oberon', opera in three acts (libretto, James Robinson Planché after Christoph Martin Wieland); 1826. Full score. Copy in the hand of Sir George Smart, 1834. Copied in sections, each with a separate original pagination, on a variety of different papers, some with a watermark of 1822. From the statement 'copied from the Original Score by Sir George T. Smart' (Add. 69856, f. 1) the source can be identified as the full score, now Add. 27746 27748, used at the first performances at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, in 1826 and bequeathed to the British Museum by Smart in 1867. The letter in Add. 69856, f. iii verso from Smart to Henry Robertson of the Theatre Royal states that Smart sent this 'original score' back to the theatre in 1834 after making the present copy, but his 'Events in the Life of George T. Smart' records its return to him as a gift after Robertson's death (Add. 41772, f. 56).
Paper. Three volumes. 225 x 300mm.
