I. LETTER BOOKS, 1813-1860.

ABERDEEN PAPERS. Vols. CCXIX-CCXCVI. Letter-books containing copies or abstracts of the correspondence of Lord Aberdeen, 1813- 1860, contained in the preceding two hundred and eighteen volumes, together with copies of other correspondence, 1860-1862. The first seventy-five were originally labelled on the spine of each volume, in an arbitrary manner, with the numerals 1-17, 75, 77-79 (given below in round brackets). These labels have now been inserted inside the volumes. Inserted notes, transcripts, cancellations and other markings were made by the Hon. Sir Arthur Hamilton- Gordon (1st Baron Stanmore 1893), who compiled these volumes when preparing the privately printed editions of his father's papers. Many of the transcripts were made by Sir Arthur's wife, Rachel Emily née Shaw-Lefevre, and his secretaries, Arthur John Lewis Gordon, of Ellon, C.M.G. 1877, and Francis Peel Murray. The dating assigned below to the various volumes is that of the main correspondence, the frequent earlier enclosures therein being ignored. Seventy-eight volumes.
