MACKENZIE PAPERS. Vols. IX-XIII. Correspondence and papers. of Maj.-Gen. John Randoll Mackenzie, M.P., of Suddie; 1779-1811. He joined the Marines as Lieutenant in 1779, received a captaincy in the 78th Regiment of Foot when raised by Lord Seaforth in 1793, accompanied the regiment to the Cape and to India, from which he got leave in Oct. 1801. As Brig.-Gen. he was appointed in Sept. 1804 to the command of the militia in the five Northern Counties of Scotland, transferred to Alderney Aug.- Oct. 1806, then to Dunbar. On 25 Apr. 1808 he became Major- General and embarked on 9 Oct. for Spain in command of a brigade under Sir David Baird. For the brief period between the departure of Sir Harry Burrard and the arrival of Sir John Cradock he commanded the forces in Portugal, led the expedition to Cadiz in Feb. 1809, and fell at Talavera 28 July of that year. Vols. IX-XI are chiefly correspondence with officers of the 78th Regt. [Rossshire Buffs] and militia officers in Scotland. In Vol. XII (ff. 59-63) are several letters about the unsuccessful expedition to Egypt in 1807. Vol. XIII contains the Peninsular War correspondence and some posthumous papers.
