SOUTHGATE COLLECTION, Vols. I-V. Fancies, In nomines, and pavans, for 5 and 6 viols, in parts, by composers of the reign of James 1, a collection said to have been made by John Jenkins for the L'Estrange family, of Hunstanton, co. Norf. In five volumes (quintus, medius, contra-tenor, tenor, and bassus), wanting a 6th part (1st or 2nd bass). The MS. was carefully collated at the time of transcription with numerous contemporary part-books and scores, the names of whose owners are given among them Barnard, probably John Barnard, Minor Canon of St. Paul's (1623). The composers named are John Ward, William White, Thomas Ravenseroft, William Cranford, Richard Dering, Giovanni Coperario (whose fancies appear to be adapted from madrigals of which the first Lines are given), Alfonso Ferrabosco (junior and senior), William Byrd, and Thomas Lupo. At the end of the bassus-part are tables of contents. Paper; ff. xvi + 88, 88, 88, 88, 91. Temp. Jas. I-Chas. I. [between 1603-1649], Small folio. Belonged apparently to Dr. Charles Burney, [Thomas] Jones, Richard Clark, and Rev. Sir F. A. Gore Ouseley.
