NELSON PAPERS. Vols. LI.-LIX. Letter-books of Lord Nelson, containing pressed copies of his autograph letters; 19 June, 1796-19 Oct. 1805. Nine volumes.
At the beginning of each volume is a rough alphabetical list, of names of the persons to whom the letters are addressed. Vol. LVII. formerly belonged to, and was presented to the Museum by, the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. Sir H. Nicolas used none of these letter-books, with the exception of the latter part of Vol. LVII., 18 June-16 Aug. 1805 (ff. 381-462), which was then separate from the rest of the volume, and in the possession of John Wilson Croker, Secretary to the Admiralty. Nicolas, however, printed many of the letters from originals and other sources. At the end of Vol. LIX. wore inserted loose two letters (pressed copies) from Lord Nelson to William Haslewood (one of his executors), both dated Victory, 7 May, 1805 (now inserted in their proper sequence in Vol. LVIII. ff. 355, 357), and one relating to two codicils to his will in favour of Lady Hamilton (cf. Pettigrew, Memoirs, etc., of Lord Nelson, ed. 1849, ii. p. 472). Paper; Quarto and Folio.
