RIPON PAPERs. Vols. I-XVI. Correspondence of the Hon. Frederick John Robinson (b. 1782, Id. 1859), created Viscount Goderich 28 Apr. 1827, and Earl of Ripon 13 Apr. 1833. The bulk of the collection relates to the affairs of India during the critical period (May 1843-June 1846) when Ripon was President of the Board of Control in Peel's second administration. His chief correspondents are Lord Ellenborough and Lord Hardinge, successive Governors-General of India, and, at home, Sir Robert Peel and the Duke of Wellington. The other side of the correspondence with Peel will be found above in the Peel Papers (Add. MSS. 40464-40466). A number of letters from Ellenborough to Lord FitzGerald, the previous President of the India Board, are included in vols. II-IV; while as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1823-1827) Ripon inherited various papers of his predecessor Nicholas Vansittart. In addition a few family letters of earlier date are prefixed to the first volume. Besides the above-mentioned offices Ripon also held the posts of Secretary for War and Colonies (twice, 30 Apr. 1827 and 22 Nov. 1830); Commissioner for Affairs of India, 17 May 1827; Prime Minister on Canning's death, Aug. 1827-Jan. 1828; Lord Privy Seal, Apr. 1833-May 1834; President of the Board of Trade, Sept. 1841.
