BROUGHTON PAPERS. Vols. X-XIV. Diaries; 1809-1818. Supplementary to Add. MSS. 43744-43765 and 56527-56571. Autograph, except Vol. X which is an imperfect copy, in Lady Dorchester's hand, including translations of entries in Latin, of part of Lord Broughton's first diary (now Add. MS. 56527) recording the start of his tour in the East with Byron. The two parts of Vol. XI complement four diaries in the Berg Collection in New York Public Library, 3 Jan.-l July 1814, 29 Mar.-5 Apr. 1816 (see MS. Facsimile * 732 (1-4), respectively filling the gap in the middle and coming at the end of the series. Vols. XII and XIII, which together with Vol. XIV fill the gap between Add. MSS. 56539 and 56540, relate to Lord Broughton's stay in Italy, partly in the company of Byron, and contain accounts of antiquities there. Extracts from Vols. XI, XIII, XIV were printed in Recollections of a Long Life, 6 vols., 1909-1911, but Vol. XII was apparently among diaries missing at the time of publication (ibid., ii, p. 71, note). Quotations from Vol. XIV also appear in E. R. Vincent, Byron, Hobhouse and Foscolo, 1949. The diaries begin or end imperfectly. Vols. XI, XX, XIV have been numbered in red ink at the beginning '10', '17' and '18' respectively. Five volumes.
