ANTHONY BACON TRANSCRIPTS.
Transcripts and extracts of the correspondence of Anthony Bacon (d. 1601), chiefly in his capacity as Private Secretary to Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex; 1580-1598, with a few of earlier date. They were made by Birch in 1750, 1751 from the originals in the Lambeth Palace Library (Nos. 647-662) for the purpose of, and incorporation in, his Memoirs of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth ... in which the secret intrigues of her court and the conduct of her Favourite Robert, Earl of Essex, both at Home and abroad are particularly illustrated, 2 vols, 1754. The principal writers (summarised at the end of the last volume) besides Bacon and Essex, are Lord Burghley, Sir Robert Cecil, Francis Bacon, Lord Henry Howard, Sir Robert Sidney, Edward Reynolds (Essex's secretary), Dr. Henry Hawkins (from Venice), Thomas Bodley and George Gilpin (from Holland), Antonio Perez (from Spain). Sixteen volumes. Paper. Small quarto. 1750, 1751.
